Clothing

The climate is subtropical with day temperatures ranging from upper 70s during the winter to the 90s from May through September. Winters (December, January and February) have cool nights dipping down into the low 50s, which is cool enough here to make a sweater feel good. Plan on hot weather clothing such as shorts, sleeveless shirts and blouses and both wet and dry shoes.

For trekking, light weight long sleeve shirts and trousers keep the bugs away. Good walking shoes are essential for inland destinations. Naturally bathing suits and a hat will be useful.

Belize is tropical casual. There is no dress code to worry about, and unless you are staying at an upscale hotel in Belize City you don't have to plan to dress for dinner.

Money

Don't exchange your US$ when you arrive. There is a penalty with the exchange (BZ$1.9825 for 1 US$), and your US$ are good everywhere at a better 2 BZ$ for 1 US$ rate.

Traveler's Checks are accepted the same as cash. Credit cards are "iffy" sometimes, and you will often be charged a 5% penalty because that is what the banks charge their customers. Plan on paying with cash and Traveler's Checks and you will save money. Better yet, Casa Maya will let you prepay your package vacations so you wont need to travel with too much cash on hand.

There are ATM machines but they are mainly for local use, not international. However, you can get money readily on your credit card at any bank. You just have to plan to be there during opening hours.
